Dry Fly Browns and Lupens

Hi Everybody!

We are still in Te Anau and today we spent time on a beautiful river. The day started off with the regular car shuffles after waiting for a herd of cows to cross the highway.  Karen and I were planning on starting our day at a regular drop off spot. Well the best laid plans were ditched when fly fisherman were already suiting up where we wanted to fish. Darn. What is plan B? We drove further upstream and finally found some water to fish close to a canyon. We walked a long way until we saw some fish. When we did, the next few hours we fun. It was all dry fly too. We fished a fly we affectionally call the Pom Pom. Karen was working her way up a nice run and a 4 pound brown came up from behind a big rock to inhail the Pom Pom. The next curve had three browns that I managed to catch. They were keyed in on caddis. All the browns on that curve were sight fished and caught in 10 inches of water. Karen and I saw our first enormous brown on the same bank. We estimated it to be in the 8 pound range. It was under an overhang before we had a chance to cast. Karen and I were quite disappointed to only fish a small stretch of water but in the end, it was fruitful. Tomorrow we are heading to Milford Sound to see the fiord.

The Pom Pom fly brought this brown to the surface.

Bob is swallowed by the beautiful Lupens which grow wild here in New Zealand.
